General Chips describe how well-sourced a number is, not how good the network is. How we verify explains what each means.
The same everywhere
Three shortcodes work on every network
| Text this | To | And you get |
|---|---|---|
| PAC | 65075 | A code to switch and keep your number |
| STAC | 75075 | A code to leave without keeping it |
| INFO | 85075 | Whether you are in contract, and what leaving would cost |
Start with INFO. It tells you the price of leaving before you talk to anyone, which is worth more than any negotiating script. Ofcom requires a residential PAC or STAC to arrive within one minute. Verified
Where they differ
Notice, exit fees and handset debt
| Network | Notice | Leaving early | Handset |
|---|---|---|---|
| O2 | 30 days | SIM Only: the rest of your term, minus 4%. | On O2 Refresh the handset is a separate debt. |
| EE | 30 days (or none, if you switch with a code) | EE calls it the Remaining Contract Charge. | EE rolls the handset into the same bill. |
| Vodafone | 30 days (or none, if you switch with a code) | Vodafone publishes the formula. | You have 30 days to pay for the handset. |
| Three | None | Airtime: the rest of your monthly charges. | Your device plan does not go away. |
Two things stand out. Three asks for no notice at all — mobile leaving runs on the code, and Three applies notice only to its broadband. And EE is the only one that folds handset debt into the exit charge; on the other three the device plan survives as its own debt.
