Getting to the right team

We don't yet know how Utility Warehouse's phone menu is structured, so we're not going to guess. If you work it out, we'd like to hear from you.

Before you call

What to know first

You do not ring UW to leave energy. UW says your new supplier handles the switch and there is no need to tell UW. Its terms add that UW may object to the switch if you owe it money. Verified

UW’s leaving article points to its sales line. The help article on cancelling energy gives 0333 777 3212, which UW’s contact page labels for people thinking of switching to UW. For an existing account, the customer services number above is the one UW publishes with hours. Verified

Leaving energy can cost you your bundle benefits. UW’s terms say its benefits depend on you having several services, and that if one ends it may remove some or all bundle benefits. If you received its switching credit and drop below a three-service bundle within 12 months, the terms say you repay it in full. Check this before you move. Verified

UW states its free-exit window as a date, not a count of days. On UW Fixed 97 and Fixed Saver 97, which end on 30 September 2027, its terms say no exit fee applies if you start switching after 12 August 2027. That is 49 days before the end date, in line with the window other suppliers state. Verified

What leaving costs

Exit fees, cooling off and complaints

Exit fee£75 per fuel to leave a fixed tariff early.

UW’s own tariff page gives £75 per fuel for UW Fixed Start, and its help centre says a fixed tariff’s exit fee is charged for each energy service if you switch supplier or change tariff before the end date. The terms for its current UW Fixed 97 and Fixed Saver 97 tariffs set the same £75 per energy service. We found no UW statement of an exit fee on its own variable tariffs.

Cooling off14 days

Fourteen days, per UW’s residential terms, to cancel any or all services without a reason. UW also advertises 30 days to change your mind, penalty free, for new customers taking a bundle of services.

ComplaintsEight weeks

Customer services first, then UW’s Customer Escalations Team. The Energy Ombudsman opens after eight weeks or on a deadlock letter; UW gives six weeks for its telecoms complaints.

The window worth knowing: Near the end of a fixed tariff you can leave free of charge even if your tariff carries an exit fee. 49 days is the common figure: British Gas, Octopus, E.ON Next and EDF all state it, and British Gas writes it as “49 days / seven weeks”, which is the same thing and explains why some suppliers quote weeks instead. Two do differ: OVO gives 53 days, and ScottishPower’s exit fee page says seven weeks in one section and six in another. Verified
