Cancellations & renewals
0345 301 4835Getting to the right team
We don't yet know how Churchill's phone menu is structured, so we're not going to guess. If you work it out, we'd like to hear from you.
Before you call
Churchill’s contact page shows no phone number. Go to their car insurance contact page and you get WhatsApp, a virtual assistant, and often a note that the lines are closed. The number below only appears after you pick “Cancel policy” or “Renewals” from their topic selector — it is published, just not visible to anyone who does not know to look.
The number in circulation is a sales line. Guides give 0345 877 6675 for cancelling. It is a genuine Churchill number, but Churchill publishes it for adding optional extras and changing your car — not for leaving. Verified
Cite Aviva or LV=, not Direct Line: Direct Line is a sister brand in the same group, so quoting it carries no weight. Verified
What you're entitled to
- Your renewal can't cost more than an equivalent new customer would pay. Under the FCA's pricing rules (PS21/5, implemented through ICOBS 6B and in force since 1 January 2022), the renewal price for the same cover through the same channel must be no higher than the equivalent new-business price. The FCA reviewed these rules in July 2025 and left them in place. Verified
- Fourteen days to change your mind. A statutory cooling-off period applies from the start of cover or from when you receive your documents, whichever is later. It applies again after each automatic renewal. Verified
- Opting out of auto-renewal is free. You can't be charged for turning it off, and you can turn it off at any time. Verified
- Churchill charges an admin fee to cancel, but will not say how much. Their policy booklet confirms that cancelling after the 14-day cooling-off period means paying for the cover used plus an administration fee — then points you to your own policy documents for the amount. No figure is published anywhere on their site, so check your schedule or ask on the call. Unverified
What they'll say, and what to say back
They doReduces the renewal mainly when you say you will not renew.
You sayBe explicit that you intend to leave. That is what moves the conversation.
They doOpens with a small discount.
You sayDecline the first offer and cite your benchmark quote.
They doAdds free extras rather than cutting the premium.
You sayAsk specifically for the cash reduction on the premium.
General These patterns are drawn from published consumer reporting on insurer retention behaviour, not from Churchill’s internal scripts.
Lines that work
"I will not be renewing this year — I have found the same cover for £X elsewhere."
General States the intention plainly, which is what routes you to someone who can change the price.
"Can you match or beat my cheapest quote?"
General Use after declining their first offer, not before.
We publish these as effective general phrasing. They are not insider scripts, and we don't claim a specific saving from using them.
