Getting to the right team

We don't yet know how Aviva's phone menu is structured, so we're not going to guess. If you work it out, we'd like to hear from you.

Before you call

Aviva publishes two numbers for the same job. Its website advertises 0345 030 7077 for servicing, with opening hours. Its policy documents print 0345 030 6984 for cancelling and for changes at renewal. Both are current and both are Aviva’s. We lead with the documents’ number because renewal changes are exactly what it is given for.

Check which Aviva product you hold — the cancellation fee swings wildly. Signature is £38. Aviva Online and Aviva Premium are £25 inside 14 days and £50 after. AvivaPlus charges nothing at all, inside or outside the cooling-off period. Verified

You get a fresh 14-day cooling-off period at every renewal, not just when you first buy. Opting out of auto-renewal is free, and Aviva charges no fee for making changes either. Cite Direct Line or LV= with a specific figure. Verified

What you're entitled to

  • Your renewal can't cost more than an equivalent new customer would pay. Under the FCA's pricing rules (PS21/5, implemented through ICOBS 6B and in force since 1 January 2022), the renewal price for the same cover through the same channel must be no higher than the equivalent new-business price. The FCA reviewed these rules in July 2025 and left them in place. Verified
  • Fourteen days to change your mind. A statutory cooling-off period applies from the start of cover or from when you receive your documents, whichever is later. It applies again after each automatic renewal. Verified
  • Opting out of auto-renewal is free. You can't be charged for turning it off, and you can turn it off at any time. Verified
  • What cancelling costs depends entirely on which Aviva you are with. Aviva Signature is £38 plus Insurance Premium Tax, whether you cancel inside or outside the cooling-off period, and nothing at all if cover has not started. Aviva Online and Aviva Premium are £25 within 14 days and £50 after. AvivaPlus charges no cancellation fee in any circumstance. Aviva publishes no figure for Aviva Zero or for Aviva, Gold and Platinum. Verified

What they'll say, and what to say back

They doDirects customers to online self-service rather than phone negotiation.

You sayCall anyway and clearly state you intend to leave. That is what routes you to someone who can change the price.

They doEmphasises cover quality and extras over price.

You sayCounter by benchmarking against a same-cover rival quote. Quality arguments only work if the comparison is not like-for-like — so make sure yours is.

They doOffers a small initial reduction.

You sayDo not accept the first offer. Name your benchmark figure and ask what else they can do.

General These patterns are drawn from published consumer reporting on insurer retention behaviour, not from Aviva’s internal scripts.

Lines that work

"My renewal is £X but I have a like-for-like quote for £Y — can you beat it?"

General Puts both numbers on the table at once. Specific beats vague every time.

"I have worked out my budget and my maximum for this year is £X."

General Frames a ceiling rather than a request, which is harder to negotiate around.

"What's the best you can do to keep me?"

General Use after declining their first offer, not before.

We publish these as effective general phrasing. They are not insider scripts, and we don't claim a specific saving from using them.
